EVGlide Power Train

Picture
The EVGlide power train is a motor/transmission assembly for rear wheel drive vehicles.

The EV Glide power train includes an ADC FB1-4001 motor, adapter plates, coupler, and 2 speed transmission. The transmission has planetary gears and is shifted thru internal hydraulic clutches. The shift positions are; park, neutral, reverse, high, and low. The park position locks the transmission so the vehicle CAN'T roll. The neutral position releases all the clutches so the vehicle is free to roll. The reverse position changes the output shaft direction so the vehicle can back up. High gear is direct drive thru the transmission. The input shaft and the output shaft turn at the same speed. Low gear is reduced thru the planetary at 1.82 to 1 ratio. The valves controlling the shifts are inside the transmission. The main hydraulic pump is the front of the transmission and is driven by the motor thru the coupler. The auxiliary pump is an external 12 volt unit. The auxiliary pump only runs when the motor is not turning and the key switch is on.

OPERATION OF THE EVGLIDE

Picture
When the key switch is on, the auxiliary pump pressurizes the hydraulic system. The shifter is moved to select a gear and the clutches for that gear are actuated. When the throttle is moved, turning the motor, the vehicle moves accordingly as the motor and transmission are directly coupled. The motor rotation also turns the main pump. When the main pump produces more than 50 psi, the auxiliary pump shuts off. If the pressure drops below 50 psi, the auxiliary pump comes on to maintain a minimum of 50 psi.

The transmission is manual shift only. When the shifter is positioned in a certain gear, the transmission stays in that gear until the shifter is moved to another position.

Most rear end gear ratios and tire sizes will allow about 40 to 45 mph in low gear. Most city street speed limits don't exceed these speeds so you won't need to shift gears in town. When entering a highway and accelerating to speed, you can shift to high without letting up on the throttle. In fact shifting under power is a little smoother than shifting while off the throttle. When shifting to another gear, you get that gear instantly. You are not going thru neutral between gears. There is no meshing of gears. They are always meshed with each other. No syncro's or long gear trains. Just a short and simple planetary system.

PHYSICAL INFORMATION

Picture
The main body of the transmission is about the same width as the 9” motor. There is no bell housing as the motor is bolted to the front of the transmission thru the adapter plates. There are two adapter plates. One is mounted to the face of the motor and one is mounted to the front face of the transmission. There is a locating step on the motor plate which fits the bore on the transmission plate to maintain the center line. The two plates are bolted together. The one piece coupler is keyed to the motor shaft and splined to the transmission input shaft. There is a slot in the coupler to engage the tangs on the main pump. The transmission adapter plate has two tapped holes on the bottom to bolt to a crossmember. The transmission tailshaft cover has a tapped bracket to mount a standard transmission mount.

The overall length of the EV Glide power train including the motor is 34”. This is about the same length as an S10 manual transmission. This whole EV Glide power train will easily fit in the tunnel under the cab of most compact pickups. No space in the engine compartment is used by the power train. More space for batteries? A gen set?

The EVGlide transmission includes a motor to transmission coupler, motor adapter block, transmission adapter block, two speed hydraulic transmission with GM 27 spline output shaft and rear transmission mount block. The motor adapter block is designed to fit the ADC FB1-4001 motor, the Netgain Warp 9 motor and some AC motors. The EVGlide transmission weighs 90 lbs. Including the adapter blocks and coupler. It holds two quarts transmission fluid. Since there is no torque converter to build high fluid temperatures, there is no need for external cooling.

This transmission has no provision for a speedometer drive. There are pickups available for the rear differential depending on the vehicle model.

A cable operated shifter for a chevrolet powerglide transmission will work on the EVGlide transmission.
